Terms of Service

We’ve added some notes to this document to make understanding the terms easier. Most of the time, we’ll direct people to The Handbook as our Code of Conduct. These terms exist to make anything that might be misinterpreted as clear as possible.

Definitions

Who we are and what some of the terms in this document mean.

“The Community” means the website, forums, and chat service here at https://severance.chat.

“The Board” means the volunteer administrators and moderators that operate this site. A current list of users that comprise The Board are listed on https://severance.chat/about.

“The Handbook” means the general conduct guidelines for The Community. The guidelines are published at https://severance.chat/guidelines.

These terms apply only to The Community, and do not apply to any other product or service created by The Board or any of its individual members. Your use of The Community is contingent on your agreement to these terms. If you do not agree to these terms you should not use The Community.

Important Considerations

These are things we feel are especially important to call attention to, as they concern your rights as a member of The Community.

These terms include a number of important provisions that affect your rights and responsibilities. Please note the following:

The indicated Disclaimers to be aware of.
The limitation of liability by The Board to you in Limits on Liability.
Your agreement to cover The Board for damages caused by your misuse of The Community in Responsibility for Your Use.
The process for carrying out arbitration for damages in Disputes.

Conditions for participation in The Community

There’s a few conditions we need you to meet to be here. You must be old enough, if we ask you to leave you have to, and you must abide by our community standards.

You must be at least thirteen years old.
You may no longer use The Community if The Board contacts you directly to say that you may not.
Your use of The Community must be in accordance with Acceptable Use and Content Standards.

Acceptable Use

There’s some things we’d ask that you not do in our space, including illegal activity and spam. Remember Principle 1!

You may not break the law using The Community.
You may not use or try to use another’s account on The Community without their specific permission.
You may not buy, sell, or otherwise trade in user names or other unique identifiers on The Community.
You may not send advertisements, chain letters, or other mass solicitations through The Community beyond independent promotion. You may not use The Community to gather addresses or other personal data for commercial mailing lists or databases.
You may not automate access or monitor The Community through a web crawler, browser plug-in or add-on, or other computer programs that are not a web browser without prior permission from The Board.
You may not use The Community to send e-mail to distribution lists, newsgroups, or group mail aliases.
You may not falsely imply that you’re affiliated with or endorsed by The Board.
You may not embed (ie “hotlink”) images, videos, and other non-text files on The Community on other webpages.
You may not remove any marks showing proprietary ownership from anything you download from The Community.
You may not embed any part of The Community on other websites with <iframe>.
You may not disable, avoid, or circumvent any security or access restrictions of The Community.
You may not strain infrastructure of The Community with an unreasonable volume of requests, or requests designed to impose an unreasonable load on information systems underlying The Community.
You may not impersonate others through The Community.
You may not encourage or help anyone in violation of these terms.

Content Standards

Along with the above, certain behaviors that are outlined in the Handbook are not tolerated here.

You may not publish material to The Community that is illegal, offensive, or otherwise harmful to others as outlined in The Handbook. This includes material that is harassing, inappropriate, abusive, or hateful.
You may not publish material to The Community that infringes anyone’s intellectual property rights, violates anyone’s privacy, or breaches agreements you have with others. You may not use The Community to disclose information that you don’t have the right to disclose, like others’ confidential or personal information.
You may not publish material to The Community containing malicious computer code, such as computer viruses or spyware.
You may not publish material to The Community as a mere placeholder, to hold a particular address, user name, or other unique identifier.

Enforcement

If you’re doing something that we said not to, we will take the appropriate steps to enforce the policies we’ve set here. Depending on the seriousness of the issue we reserve the right to resort to legal means if we feel we need to.

The Board reserves the right to investigate and prosecute violations of these terms through legal means. Such legal actions by The Board will only be taken in extreme cases where a violation of these terms cannot be resolved through termination of an Account with The Community.

The Board reserves the right to change, redact, and delete material on The Community for any reason. If you believe someone has published material to The Community in violation of these terms, contact us immediately.

Your Account

We require you make an account to be here and access the stuff that’s here. If you want to delete your account you can ask us to do it. We reserve the right to close your account if you’re breaching the policies we have.

You must create and log into an account to use The Community.

To create an account, you must provide some information about yourself. If you create an account, you agree to provide, at a minimum, a valid e-mail address, and to keep that address up-to-date. You may close your account at any time by contacting The Board.

You agree to be responsible for all action taken using your account, whether authorized by you or not, until you either close your account or notify The Board that your account has been compromised. You agree to notify The Board immediately if you suspect your account has been compromised. You agree to select a secure password for your account, and keep it secret.

The Board may restrict, suspend, or close your account on The Community according to its policy for handling copyright-related takedown requests, or if The Board reasonably believes that you’ve broken any rule in these terms.

Your Content

Stuff you post here is yours. We don’t own it, and no one else has the right to use it without your permission. That said, we’d appreciate you not plagiarizing other people’s stuff. We also don’t guarantee things you upload here will stay here forever. We appreciate awesome things that end up here and may circulate it around the site to share with others. Lastly, if someone else steals work you’ve uploaded here we’re not liable for that. We’ll probably ban that person but you’re on your own with regard to legal prosecution.

Nothing in these terms gives The Board any ownership rights in intellectual property that you share with The Community, such as your account information, posts, or other content you submit to The Community. Nothing in these terms gives you any ownership rights in The Board’s intellectual property, either.

Between you and The Board, you remain solely responsible for material you publish to The Community. You agree not to wrongly imply that content you submit to The Community is sponsored or approved by The Board. These terms do not obligate The Board to store, maintain, or provide copies of content you submit, and to change it, according to these terms.

Material you publish to The Community belongs to you, and you decide what permission to give others for it. At minimum, you license The Board to provide material that you publish to The Community to other users of The Community. That special license allows The Board to copy, publish, and analyze material you publish to The Community.

When material you submit is removed from The Community, whether by you or by The Board, The Board’s special license ends when the last copy disappears from The Board’s backups, caches, and other systems. Other licenses you apply to content you submit, such as Creative Commons licenses, may continue after your content is removed. Those licenses may give others, or The Board itself, the right to share your content through The Community again.

Others who receive content you submit to The Community may violate the terms on which you license your content. You agree that The Board will not be liable to you for those violations or their consequences.

Your Responsibility

We’re not perfect. If we get a legal complaint about something you did, we’ll let you know but you agree to not blame us for that. If we don’t let you know then you can blame us, but then we’d have to take over. If we were to take over we’d make sure to not fault you without letting you know first.

You agree to indemnify The Board from legal claims by others related to your breach of these terms, or breach of these terms by others using your account on The Community. Both you and The Board agree to notify the other side of any legal claims for which you might have to indemnify The Board as soon as possible. If The Board fails to notify you of a legal claim promptly, you won’t have to indemnify The Board for damages that you could have defended against or mitigated with prompt notice. You agree to allow The Board to control investigation, defense, and settlement of legal claims for which you would have to indemnify The Board, and to cooperate with those efforts. The Board agrees not to agree to any settlement that admits fault for you or imposes obligations on you without your prior agreement.

Disclaimers

We might add other stuff to this site or provide links to it. The terms that cover this thing don’t cover those things. Also, we offer this site as is, meaning you assume risk in using it for anything that might come up.

Additional services may be linked to, embedded, or integrated into The Community. The Board does not make any warranty about services run by others, or materials they may provide. Use of services run by others may be governed by other terms between you and the one running service.

You accept all risk of using the community and material published to the community. The Board provides the community “as is”, without any warranty whatsoever.

Limits on Liability

We did our best to cover as much as reasonably possible here. If we left something out by accident, it’s not our fault. Also, we’re not serious enough about this thing to be on the hook for liability claims.

Neither The Board nor its suppliers will be liable to you for breach-of-contract damages their personnel could not have reasonably foreseen when you agreed to these terms.

As far as the law allows, The Board owes no total liability to you for claims of any kind that are related to The Community or the material contained within.

Feedback

You’re welcome to give us feedback on the site, but we may or may not inform you if we implement that feedback. We also don’t need to ask for your permission to use your idea or pay you for your idea. Also, don’t give us any ideas that might violate an NDA you have.

The Board welcomes your feedback and suggestions for The Community. See the Contact section below for ways to get in touch with us.

You agree that The Board will be free to act on feedback and suggestions you provide, and that The Board won’t have to notify you that your feedback was used, get your permission to use it, or pay you. You agree not to submit feedback or suggestions that you believe might be confidential or proprietary, to you or others.

Termination

If we part ways and end this agreement, you’re agreeing that you can’t use the community anymore. Some of the things we’ve written out here continue to remain true even if the rest of these terms don’t.

Either you or The Board may end the agreement written out in these terms at any time. When our agreement ends, your permission to use The Community also ends.

The following provisions survive the end of our agreement: Your Content, Feedback, Your Responsibility, Disclaimers, Limits on Liability, and General Terms.

Disputes

We don’t foresee there being legal disputes for these terms or your usage of severance.chat. However, if that did happen then Kentucky would be where the dispute would get filed since that’s where the owner of the server is based.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky, USA will govern any dispute related to these terms or your use of The Community.

You and The Board agree to seek injunctions related to these terms only in state or federal court in Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA. Neither you nor The Board will object to jurisdiction, forum, or venue in those courts.

Other than to seek an injunction or for claims under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, you and The Board will resolve any dispute by binding American Arbitration Association arbitration. Arbitration will follow the AAA’s Commercial Arbitration Rules and Supplementary Procedures for Consumer Related Disputes. Arbitration will happen in Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA. You will settle any dispute as an individual, and not as part of a class action or other representative proceeding, whether as the plaintiff or a class member. No arbitrator will consolidate any dispute with any other arbitration without The Board’s permission.

Any arbitration award will include costs of the arbitration, reasonable attorneys’ fees, and reasonable costs for witnesses. You and The Board may enter arbitration awards in any court with jurisdiction.

General Terms

In the case where something here can’t be enforced legally, then we’ll change it to make it enforceable. If we can’t do that then we’ll get rid of it. Also, these terms are between you and us. You can’t apply them to someone else. We can apply them to someone else that represents us.

If you break part of these terms and we let it go, that means everything else listed here still applies to you. Lastly, these terms are the only terms. Any other terms that existed don’t mean anything anymore.

If a provision of these terms is unenforceable as written, but could be changed to make it enforceable, that provision should be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable. Otherwise, that provision should be removed.

You may not assign your agreement with The Board. The Board may assign your agreement to any affiliate of The Board, any other company that obtains control of The Board, or any other company that buys assets of The Board related to The Community. Any attempted assignment against these terms has no legal effect.

Neither the exercise of any right under this Agreement, nor waiver of any breach of this Agreement, waives any other breach of this Agreement.

These terms embody all the terms of agreement between you and The Board about use of The Community. These terms entirely replace any other agreements about your use of The Community, written or not.

You may notify The Board under these terms, and send questions to The Board, at board@lumon.industries.

The Board may notify you under these terms using the e-mail address you provide for your account on The Community, or by posting a message to the homepage of The Community or your account page.

Changes

If we update things we’ll put a note here somewhere. If it’s a big update we’ll send everyone an email. When we update the terms those will be the ones you’ll have to agree to to continue using the community.

The Board last updated these terms on March 12, 2026, and may update these terms again. The Board will post all updates to The Community. For updates that contain substantial changes, The Board agrees to e-mail you, if you’ve created an account and provided a valid e-mail address. The Board may also announce updates with special messages or alerts on The Community.

Once you get notice of an update to these terms, you must agree to the new terms in order to keep using The Community.
